# ChatGPT

Install Nansen from the ChatGPT plugin directory. Tool calls spend your Nansen API credits.

Explore tokens, Smart Money activity, and public wallets from inside ChatGPT. No API key, no manual connector setup.

### Install

1. Open [**Nansen** in the ChatGPT plugin directory](https://chatgpt.com/plugins/plugin_asdk_app_6aa751cb02ec8191bc9e22d48ba9789f). If that link does not open, [search the directory for Nansen](https://chatgpt.com/plugins?plugin-search=nansen\&search=nansen).
2. Select **Connect**, then sign in to Nansen. Choose the account whose API credits you want to use.

Nansen then works in ChatGPT on the web, on mobile, and in the desktop app. To use it, mention **@Nansen** or select it from the **+** menu.

{% hint style="info" %}
Tool calls spend your [Nansen API credits](/getting-started/credits.md) — not your ChatGPT subscription — and are subject to [rate limits](/getting-started/rate-limits.md). One prompt can trigger several calls, and some tools cost far more per call than others. Nansen is read-only: it cannot trade or move assets.
{% endhint %}

Cannot install? See [Plan and workspace eligibility](#plan-and-workspace-eligibility).

### Plan and workspace eligibility

The plugin directory is visible across ChatGPT plans, but OpenAI does not publish a per-plan list of who can install a given plugin. Per [OpenAI's plugin documentation](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001256-plugins-in-chatgpt-and-codex), whether you can install or invoke one depends on your **plan, workspace, role, region, and surface**.

If the **Connect** button is greyed out, OpenAI attributes that to geo restrictions, workspace settings, or your plan type.

On managed workspaces:

* **Business** — plugins and apps are enabled by default; an administrator can change workspace-wide availability.
* **Enterprise and Edu** — new plugins and apps are **disabled by default**. An administrator must enable Nansen under **Workspace settings → Plugins**, and assign eligible roles where role-based controls apply.

Nansen does not require a paid Nansen plan for this connector. A [Nansen Free account](/getting-started/credits.md#free-plan-details) can connect and use tools while it has enough API credits for each call. Free accounts start with some trial credits; after those are used, a daily top-up brings additional trial credits if it is below certain minimum threshold. Some tool calls cost more than 10 credits, so check [credits per call](/mcp/connectors.md#credits-per-call) and your available balance before using them.

Your ChatGPT plan and workspace must also allow you to install and invoke the plugin, as described above.

### Verify your connection

With Nansen available in the conversation, send:

> Use Nansen to get token information for USDC on Ethereum, contract 0xA0b86991c6218b36c1d19d4a2e9eb0ce3606eb48. Show the returned data and report any tool error.

Check that ChatGPT actually calls Nansen and returns token data. A visible plugin entry or a general answer about USDC does not verify account access. This check consumes API credits. Market figures change, so compare the answer with the tool result rather than expecting a fixed price.

### Try a research prompt

* "Show Solana tokens with Smart Money inflows over the last 24 hours."
* "Show the current token balances held by Smart Traders and funds on Ethereum."
* "Find Wintermute in Nansen, then show its current token holdings. Tell me which entity or address you used."
* "Look up PEPE on Ethereum and summarize its recent price and token flows."

ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok use the same [12 curated tools](/mcp/connectors.md#curated-tools). See [credits per call](/mcp/connectors.md#credits-per-call). Availability depends on supported chains, markets, and account access. For the [full tool catalog](/mcp/connecting/tools.md), use [Manually connecting to Nansen MCP](/mcp/connecting.md) in another MCP client.

### Troubleshooting

| Problem                                         | What to do                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          |
| ----------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Nansen is missing, or **Connect** is greyed out | OpenAI attributes a greyed-out Connect button to geo restrictions, workspace settings, or plan type. On a managed workspace, ask your administrator to enable Nansen under **Workspace settings → Plugins**. See [Plan and workspace eligibility](#plan-and-workspace-eligibility). |
| Sign-in is requested again, or access is denied | Reconnect with the intended Nansen account. |
| Insufficient credits | Check API credits for the account used during sign-in at [Nansen API](https://app.nansen.ai/api?tab=api). The requested operation may cost more than the remaining balance. |
| Rate limit reached | Wait before retrying and follow any retry guidance in the error. Avoid repeatedly submitting the same prompt. |
| Tool call fails with a request ID | Save the request ID, prompt, error text, and time of the request, then send them to Nansen support. Do not share credentials. |
| ChatGPT answers without calling Nansen | Mention **@Nansen** in the conversation and explicitly ask it to use Nansen. |
| Tools appear outdated | Reconnect Nansen from the plugin directory and start a new conversation. |

To stop using Nansen, remove it from ChatGPT's plugin settings.

<details>

<summary>Manual setup (developer mode)</summary>

You do not need this if you installed Nansen from the directory. Use it only if your plan or workspace cannot install the published plugin, and you have developer mode available.

[OpenAI's developer-mode documentation](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/developer-mode) states developer mode is "available to Pro, Plus, Business, Enterprise, and Education accounts on the web." Workspace policy may restrict access.

1. Open [**Settings → Security and login**](https://chatgpt.com/#settings/Security) and turn on **Developer mode**.

   ![Security and login settings with the Developer mode toggle turned on](https://3666025612-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FHE8GKwbmDRKKCMC7hnip%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-eea5ad8730c7851035e9eb470d2dad2b918e3928%2Fchatgpt-developer-mode.png?alt=media)
2. Open [ChatGPT Plugins](https://chatgpt.com/plugins), select the **plus** button, and create a connection with these values:

   | Field                  | Value                                                                                                                           |

6. Scroll down to **OpenID support** and uncheck **OIDC enabled**, as shown below.

   ![OpenID support with OIDC enabled unchecked](https://3666025612-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FHE8GKwbmDRKKCMC7hnip%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-5e243cd4715ab9fb4a86c645c7cbed1ce88a29a9%2Fchatgpt-oidc-disabled.png?alt=media)
7. Review the custom MCP server notice, check **I understand and want to continue**, then click **Create**. Sign in to Nansen and approve the requested access.
8. Review the discovered tools, then open a new conversation and mention **@Nansen**.

Use the server URL above for ChatGPT. The `/ra/mcp` endpoint in [Manually connecting to Nansen MCP](/mcp/connecting.md) is for API-key clients.

If sign-in fails with an invalid client or redirect URI, confirm the Client ID is `chatgpt`. Nansen must register the exact callback URL used by ChatGPT; contact Nansen support with the callback URL shown in the connection settings. Do not send an authorization code or token.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.nansen.ai/mcp/connectors/chatgpt.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
